THE Petroleum Minister, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, has said that the Government has constituted a task force to closely monitor the liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) situation.
"We have constituted a task force headed by the Special Secretary, Mr M. S. Srinivasan, to report on a daily basis on the LPG supply situation," he said on Monday.
The Minister also said he had been informed by Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd that the company has liquidated its two-day backlog. Further, Indian Oil Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation said they have cleared their waiting list to a large extent. The Government plans to take tough action against black marketers of LPG.
Mr Aiyar had warned the black marketers that strict action would be taken if subsidised LPG was found to be diverted for commercial use. The LPG distributorship will be cancelled and action will be taken against oil company officials found conniving with the diversion, the Minister said on Sunday.
Subsidised domestic LPG was being diverted for use by commercial establishments, which should have paid the market price for the fuel. To arrest LPG shortage, India will import additional quantities of LPG this week. The shortage was mainly due to the closure of some of the refineries including a unit at the Reliance Industries Jamnagar refinery, creating a deficit of 0.3 million tonnes. Scarcity of LPG was also attributed to the strike on September 29 at IOC's bottling plant in Delhi.
