Foodgrains body plea on rail tariff norm

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Oct. 12

THE Tamilnadu Foodgrains Merchants Association wants the reclassification of tariff for foodgrains and pulses from Class 90 to Class 120 by the Railway Ministry dropped.

In a letter addressed to the Minister of State for Railways, Mr R. Velu, the association Secretary, Mr P. Subhaschandra Bose, said the move would lead to a hike in freight rates by 33.3 per cent.

Tamil Nadu entirely depended on Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra for its wheat and pulses requirement.

Wheat and pulses are being transported to Tamil Nadu usually by rail. It is estimated that in a city like Madurai imports are more than one-and-a-half lakh tonnes of foodgrains and pulses.

Earlier, in a reply given to a memorandum by the association, the Railway Minister has said that the goods intended for public distribution system (PDS) is exempted from freight escalation.
