THE Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, today described eminent economist Dr I.G. Patel as an "excellent economic policy maker" and a man of "great intellectual and moral elegance".

Speaking at the memorial meeting organised by the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) to mourn the passing away of Dr Patel, the Finance Minister said that very few attained a legendary status so early in their lives as Dr Patel did.

The Finance Minister also highlighted that Dr Patel was the first economist to serve as Secretary (Economic Affairs) in the late 1960s.

"That principle has since been observed intermittently, and I think it deserves to be followed as an invariable rule," Mr Chidambaram said.

At the memorial meeting, the Finance Minister also read out a tribute paid by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to Dr I.G. Patel.
