Teles India router `helps cos cut phone bills'

Preethi J.

Bangalore , Oct. 14

TELES India has launched a voice router — TELES.iGATE. The router plugs into a company's telephone exchange and automatically routes a telephone call so that it bills the least amount.

In India, interconnectivity fees make calls from a landline to a mobile more expensive than a call from one cell-phone to another. This is where routers attempt to connect using the most economical path.

"Often cellular carriers allow free intra-network calls and provide free night and week-end minutes for local and national calls. This router is designed to select the most optimal service provider based on cost and quality of service," said Mr Devasia Kurien, Managing Director, Teles India.

The company claims that the voice router reduces communication costs for enterprises by 40-60 per cent. Textile firm Madura Garments saved Rs 10,000 over a month, and Transworks Information Services Ltd, business process outsourcing company, also approved of this product, it said.

Mr Naveen Kumar, Administration Manager at Transworks, said, "We saw 50 per cent saving with the router. In a month, this has saved us Rs 1 lakh."

However, clients such as Bangalore-based Tavant Technologies, an enterprise software services company, disagree with the company's claims to reduce costs by 40-60 per cent. When Business Line contacted Mr Kiran Gopalarajan, in-charge of communication at Tavant, he denied that their savings were in that range.

The router works by managing SIM cards, each from different telecom operators in the country, which are set into it. It identifies offers, discounts and sudden drops in prices as part of promotional deals by mobile operators.

It also establishes connections when the lines are temporarily busy by performing automatic protocol recognition. It chooses alternative routes automatically when one network provider is overloaded.

The price of this gateway ranges from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. Teles offers a financing model based on profit sharing.

A company need not buy the product, but can split the amount saved on communication on a 50:50 basis with Teles.
