`IT Act meant to ensure minimal Govt intervention'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Oct. 14

MR BRIJESH Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, today stated that the proposed amendments to the IT Act, 2000 were meant to ensure minimal Government intervention and that it was up to the industry to regulate itself.

Addressing an interactive session on IT Act, 2000 and proposed amendments, organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Mr Kumar emphasised that the proposed amendments mandated discussion with a self-regulatory body for the industry before specifying reasonable security practices for the sector.

In the context of call centres, he noted the industry's plea for stringent laws on data protection. The IT Secretary also pointed out the divergent schools of thought amongst different countries regarding data protection, and emphasised that India was committed to taking a balanced approach.
