MORE agro-processing units should be set up in Andhra Pradesh to add value to agricultural produce and increase rural employment opportunities, besides enhancing the net return for the farmer, Mr M. Gopalakrishna, Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Financial Corporation, has said.
He was speaking at a function at Kotha Kopperla village in Pusapatirega mandal of Vizianagaram district on Wednesday after inaugurating a maize processing unit, Vijayanagar Bio-tech Ltd, set up at a cost of Rs 21 crore. He complimented the promoter, Mr D. Rangaaju, for setting up the unit and helping farmers in the area.
Mr Rangaraju, Managing Director and Vice-chairman, said the plant had a capacity of 45,000 tonnes per annum and initially it would produce 30,000 tonnes of starch to be converted into flour, liquid glucose and other material suitable for the paper, pharmaceutical and other industries.
It would provide direct employment to 250 persons and several by-products such as gluten would be produced. The by-products could be used as cattle feed to increase milk yield by 30 per cent.
He said the company was planning to promote dairying in the area by supplying cattle feed to farmers with an arrangement to buy back the milk. "It will be our endeavour to strive for the all-round agricultural development of the area," he added.
