Chennai , Oct. 15

THE Tamil Nadu Government is in the process of finalising a new master plan for Chennai, which will incorporate features to permit development of hotel projects in suitable locations, said the Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa.

Inaugurating the annual convention of the Federation of Hotels & Restaurants Association here on Saturday, she said the Government has taken note of the hotel industry's request regarding the construction of multi-storeyed hotel projects.

The Government was also looking at urban infrastructure to handle higher density of both service utilities and traffic management.

Ms Jayalalithaa said the hotel and restaurant industry should be treated as basic infrastructure, as the spin-off benefits were immense. The long pending request for reduction of the rate of luxury tax on hotel rooms in Tamil Nadu would be considered favourably.

The Chief Minister said the establishment of a circular Southern Splendour Tourist Train was on the anvil.

Tamil Nadu and the southern States were working on developing inter-state travel circuits. This, she said, was a part of the Government's seven-point action plan to promote tourism in the State.

As part of the action plan, the Government has increased budget allocation from Rs 4.36 crore in 2000-01 to Rs 32.42 crore in 2005-06. Various infrastructure development works like link roads and other amenities have been provided, she said.

As a part of this drive, destination development projects have been taken up.

The projects include the integrated development of Mahabalipuram at a cost Rs 9.32 crore and the development of infrastructure at Yercaud at a cost of Rs 4.50 crore.

The circuits being developed are an eco-tourism circuit, Swami Vivekananda circuit and the Navagraha Circuit in the Cauvery Delta districts.

She said that beach tourism is becoming popular in Rameswaram and Mandapam. This was a tremendous opportunity of investment in beach resorts in the State.

The State has been the destination of choice for investment and invited investors to use the opportunity to add more rooms and develop the tourism potential of Tamil Nadu.
