Mangalore , Oct. 19

SYNDICATE Bank, in association with Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation and Kadamba Charitable Trust of Sirsi, has launched `Synd Kuteera' — a rural housing scheme for women belonging to the below poverty line (BPL) category.

Under the scheme, each beneficiary gets a loan of Rs 20,000 from the bank and a subsidy of Rs 10,000 from the corporation. The NGO — Kadamba Charitable Trust — acts as a facilitator for the scheme.

A press release from the Karwar regional office of the bank stated that Mr Prakash P. Mallya, Executive Director of the bank, launched the scheme at Murdeshwar in Uttara Kannada district. Under the scheme, the bank has sanctioned loans worth Rs 2.70 crore to 1,334 women belonging to the BPL category.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Mallya said the bank would introduce the scheme in other parts of the country after watching its performance in Uttara Kannada district. Syndicate Bank has taken various initiatives in increasing rural credit, particularly in agriculture, rural housing and cottage industries.

Mr Anantha Kumar Hegde, MP from Uttara Kannada, who presided over the function, said the beneficiaries would be trained to take up various self-employment activities.

Mr Nagesh B. Prabhu, Regional Manager of Karwar office, assured the beneficiaries that they would be given free skill upgradation training.
