Art silk industry not keen on joining CITI

Our Bureau

Coimbatore , Oct.19

THE Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI)'s move to rope in other sections of the domestic textile industry into its fold has hit a discordant note with one of the key representative bodies of synthetic textile producers rejecting the idea."We are not contemplating becoming members of CITI as our members feel they would not get true representation there," said Mr Arun Jariwala, Chairman of the Federation of Indian Art Silk Industry.

Talking to presspersons here, Mr Jariwala who is also the Chairman of the Surat Art Silk Cloth Manufacturers Association, said the issues faced by the manufacturers and processors of synthetic and cellulosic fibre/filaments are different from that of the spun yarn manufacturers, including the cotton yarn industry, with the fiscal duty being the core issue.

The duty structures are different for both. This being the case "our objective is essentially not compatible with that of CITI," he said.

Even if the art silk industry was taken into CITI, the industry would not be accorded true representation in the CITI committee and its role would be only an advisory one. The executive committee members of the federation did not support the idea of joining CITI and instead have favoured a separate forum of their own, Mr Jariwala said. The Federation of Indian Art Silk Industry consists of 39 associations of the synthetic and man-made fibre/filament processors and the members of the federation account for a per day textile processing of about Rs 20 crore.

Mr Jariwala said with the liberalisation of the textile trade under the WTO regime, different duty for different fibre sounded quite jarring and the federation had asked the government to treat all fibres evenly. The Federation asked the Centre for a uniform 8 per cent duty for all fibres.Mr Jariwala was here to participate in the convocation of the Textile Ministry- sponsored Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Textile Management.
