A view of Tata Power's Jojobera plant

THE corporate philosophy at the Jojobera power plant of the Tata Power Company Ltd is short and simple: to ensure quality, cheap, abundant and reliable power supply to its customer base with the objective of facilitating economic progress of the region. Having recently synchronised a 120-MW unit, the cumulative power generation capacity from the four units at the Jojobera plant has gone up to 427.5 MW. Power generated at Jojobera is distributed — through Tata Steel — to the township, Tata Steel works and associated companies of the Tata Group, among others.

The focus is also on adhering to emission norms of global standards. Towards this end, the Jojobera plant has bagged the OHSAS (Operational Health & Safety Assessment Series) 18001 certificate, the ISO 14001 certificate, the Golden Peacock Award for Environment Management and Greentech Gold Safety Award. Responsibility to the environment forms part of the company's overall business plans.

According to Mr S. Baijal, Deputy General Manager of Tata Power's Jojobera plant, the plant load factor at Jojobera is 85 per cent. A total of 2,690 million units of power is expected to be sold in 2005-06, up from 1,950 million units that were sold in 2004-05.

Along with augmentation of the power generation capacity, adequate emphasis has been laid on addressing environmental issues. Thirty-five per cent of the plant area is covered with greenery, with 67,500 trees having been planted all over the plant site. The zero-discharge, coal-based plant has fly ash disposal of 90 per cent. An online energy management system has been installed and emission norms have been maintained at levels below permissible limits.

Mr Baijal said, "For us, these awards and certifications are recognitions and pose new challenges which invigorate us to maintain emission standards at expected levels. We are happy to report that no no-conformity reports have been received from any certifying agency, so far."

The Quality Circles concept has encouraged personnel at Tata Power's Jojobera plant to dare to dream to excel. Every year, at least two teams from the plant qualify for the nationals. Quite an achievement for a power entity where the man-MW ratio is 0.8, against the industry average of 1.
