Letters Insurance staff transfers
This refers to the news item on wage revision in public sector general insurance companies (Business Line, October 20). It is a pity that the much-delayed wage revision is still pending due to the dispute on transfer of Class III (clerical staff) employees. The revision has been pending since August 1, .2002. The General Insurers Public Sector Association's (GIPSA) initial proposal was transfers within a radius of 1,000 km, which it reduced to 500 km due to stiff opposition from the unions. Not satisfied with this, the General Insurance Employees All India Association called for a one-day strike. On October 10 the GIPSA again reduced the distance of transfer to 250 km. The transfers should be "need based" only and not for the sake of transfer. It is to be noted that in the banking sector the maximum distance for transfer of award (clerical) staff is 100 km. P. P.
