`Alliance for Water' meet in Mangalore on Sunday

Mangalore , Oct. 20

THE `Alliance for Water' will organise the first Netravathi river basin stakeholders' meet in Mangalore on October 23.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Dr H.V. Parshwanath, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district and Chairman of `Alliance for Water', said the Netravathi is the main source of drinking water for many towns on its banks. It irrigates 3.5 lakh hectares of lands of around 10 lakh farmers in the district.

However, the district faces water scarcity during summer due to lack of an efficient water management system. The meet hopes to bring together all the stakeholders of Netravathi river basin's water resources on a common platform.

The meet will help in involving them in a river basin development programme and formulating a water management policy for the district, he said.

Prof. S.G. Mayya of National Institute of Technology Karnataka(NITK), who is also the Vice-Chairman of `Alliance for Water', said the development of water policy for the district needs a holistic approach.

Apart from identifying the users, the meet would arrive at a realistic estimate of water resources and their spatial and temporal distribution.

The meet would also initiate steps for the preparation of a vision document for the district covering the supply and demand projections and an integrated river basin development plan. Various technological options for resource enhancement would be discussed at the meet.

The meet has been jointly organised by the district administration, the Department of Applied Mechanics and Hydraulics of NITK, NGOs Task Force of Mangalore and the Dakshina Kannada Parisarasaktha Okkoota, Prof. Mayya added.
