Shipping Industry & Economy - Education Floating varsity arrives in Chennai Our Bureau
Chennai , Oct. 20 EXPLORER, a floating university campus for the Semester at Sea programme under academic sponsorship by the University of Pittsburgh, US, arrived at the Chennai port on Wednesday. The ship arrived from Port St Louis in Mauritius, and will leave on October 23 to Yan Yaun Gang in Myanmar. Students will visit places in and around Chennai during the ship's stay in the city, said a Chennai Port Trust official. Semester at Sea provides study abroad opportunities to explore and study people, places and cultures around the world. Its primary focus is an undergraduate programme available to students at any accredited college or university, says information available at Semester at Sea Web site. The University of Colorado served as the academic sponsor until 1980. The ship has nine classrooms, a library with a significant collection of volumes tailored to the international academic focus of Semester at Sea, a computer lab with Internet access, a students' union, a campus store, two dining rooms, a swimming pool and a fitness centre. The 24,300-tonne motor vessel is 590 feet long, has beam of 84 feet and a draft of 24 feet. Built in 2002 by Blohm & Voss shipbuilders of Germany, it is billed as the fastest passenger ship afloat today with a cruising speed of 28 knots, according to information available on the Web site.
