Bangalore , Oct. 24

PANTALOON, RPG Group, Shoppers' Stop, Subhiksha, Bata and Lifetsyle are among the ten Indian retailers that have made it to the Top 500 retailers' list in Retail Asia magazine.

Though Japanese and Australian players continue to rule the roost in the retailing industry, the Indian industry is the `new China' in terms of economic opportunity, says the report.

The Indian retailing industry, estimated to be worth Rs 13,00,000 crore ($286 billion) contributes to 10 per cent of the country's GDP and 6 per cent of employment.

The findings of the research, conducted by Euromonitor International, were shared at the Retail Asia-KPMG-Euromonitor roadshows held at Mumbai today.

The Indian economy grew 8 per cent last year and consumer spending grew by 11 per cent in the 10 years, according to Mr Stephen Goh, Executive Chairman, Retail Asia.

The report says that though Japan dominates in terms of overall sales and per capita retail sales, the retail markets in both India and China are strengthening, thanks to higher and sustained growth over the past few years.

The ranking of the 500 companies is based on total retail turnover.

The list of the 500 retail companies is across 14 economies (Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and Vietnam).

The list also ranks the top 10 retailers in each of the 14 economies as well as across eight retail formats (including clothing, footwear and accessories stores, convenience stores, department stores, health and beauty stores, hypermarkets, hardline stores, supermarkets).
