India to import onions from China, Pak

New Delhi , Oct. 24

IN a bid to check spiralling onion prices, India will import 2,000 tonnes of onion from China and 650 tonnes from Pakistan, through the State procurement agency, National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (Nafed).

Onion imports are being done through private traders as well, said official sources.

"At present, we are getting quotes of about $240 per tonne from China at cost including freight (c.i.f.) basis," said a senior Nafed official.

A shipment of about 150 tonnes of onions from Pakistan have arrived today in Mumbai.

"Another 500 tonnes are likely to be imported from Pakistan via Atari-Wagah border which would hit Delhi within a week," he said. The Chinese consignment would reach Mumbai port within two weeks.

During April-October this year, India has exported four lakh tonnes of onion as compared to six lakh tonnes during the same period last year.

The supply situation was improving with fresh arrivals from Rajasthan, leading to a fall in wholesale prices of the commodity, according to officials. The wholesale prices have fallen from Rs 1,315 per quintal last week to Rs 1,185 per quintal.

At Azadpur mandi, the main market for the National Capital Region, nearly 8,800 quintal of onions arrived today from Rajasthan.
