Letters Taxing the candidates
The Central Board of Direct Taxes should form a special cell for the scrutiny of assets and incomes of all candidates contesting elections. It should be a rule that cases of all contestants and their family-members be compulsorily scrutinised by exclusive cells set up for the purpose in different ranges without being closed under the summary-assessment scheme. The Income-Tax (IT) returns of the candidates should be matched with the affidavits they file alongwith the nomination papers. Complaints filed with the Election Commission on over-expenditure in elections should be forwarded to IT cells. Huge amounts of money spent on the `gamble' of contesting elections raise doubts about the credibility of the candidates' affidavits listing their assets and those of their family-members. Such scrutiny will reduce the rush of aspirants for party ticket, and may perhaps revive the golden days when politics was understood as a social service in the real sense of the word, rather than as a money-spinner, as it is now.
