THE Government is planning to introduce a Bill in the winter session of Parliament that would declare National Institute of Fashion Design (NIFT) as an institute of national importance and grant more autonomy to its Board of Governors.
"The Bill has been drafted in consultation with various ministries. It will now go to the Cabinet for approval. It could be introduced in the winter session," the Textile Minister, Mr Shankersinh Vaghela, said after the convocation of NIFT.
He said that with the passage of the Bill, NIFT would get the status akin to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Indian Institute of Technology.
After the Bill is passed, NIFT, which has been according diplomas to its students, would be able to award them degrees, thus fulfilling a long-standing demand of the students.
At present, there are seven NIFT centres and the Government is planning two more - one in Uttar Pradesh and the other in Kerala.
"The centre in Uttar Pradesh will come up in Rae Bareilly as Feroz Gandhi Institute there has agreed to provide infrastructure," Mr Vaghela said.
