Chennai , Nov. 4

MESSE Munchen International of Germany, one of world's leading trade fair companies, is interested in providing maintenance and marketing services to trade fair centres that may be put up in India.

At a press conference here today, the Messe Munchen's Chairman and CEO, Mr Manfred Wutzlhofer, said that while the details were a matter of negotiations, the company would not mind committing itself to guaranteeing a certain amount of business.

Messe Munchen International has a portfolio of 40-odd trade fairs covering range of products from engineering and technology to watches and jewellery. Over 30,000 exhibitors from more than 100 countries and over two million visitors take part in trade fairs in Munich each year, Mr Wutzlhofer said. Apart from this, the company also holds trade fairs abroad. It has joined hands with a Chinese company to hold fairs in Shanghai.

Mr Wutzlhofer noted that a good, large trade fair centre would bring several benefits to the city and the State in which it is located. For example, the trade fair centre in Munich brings in revenues of Euro 1.7 billion to the city and another 2 million euros to the city authorities in the form of various taxes.

He said that many exhibitors at the Munchen trade fairs had expressed desire to participate in fairs in India. India, he said, had a huge potential to attract exhibitors. He said that in order to realise the potential, the State/city government should put up the supporting infrastructure, such as rail and road connectivity and hotels.

Mr Wutzlhofer said that an exhibition centre could start with around 45,000 square metres, and could add about 5,000 sq metres each year, so that in about a decade it becomes a large 100,000 sq. mt fair ground.

Speaking at the press conference, Mr A Ramakrishna, former Deputy Managing Director of L&T, said that the L&T-built trade fair centre in Hyderabad cost Rs 90 crore.
