Telecommunications Sonia Gandhi to open ITI's new facility at Rae Bareli Our Bureau
New Delhi , Nov. 7 THE National Advisory Council Chairperson, Ms Sonia Gandhi, would inaugurate the mobile equipment manufacturing facility of ITI at Rae Bareli (Uttar Pradesh) on November 9, in the presence of the Union Minister for Communications & Information Technology, Mr Dayanidhi Maran. "ITI is setting up the 3 million lines GSM equipment manufacturing facility in its unit in Rae Bareli. It is backed by a strong technology transfer agreement between ITI and Alcatel, France. ITI Rae Bareli is the second plant of the ITI (after Mankapur) where the manufacturing facility has been set up under the revival plan of ITI, for which the Government has approved a financial package of about Rs 1,000 crore," an official release said here. Dr Shakeel Ahmad, Minister of State for Communications & Information Technology, Mr Rahul Gandhi, MP, and Mr Etienne Fouques, President-Mobile, Alcatel would also be present on the occasion. The Rae Bareli unit would also manufacture rooftop towers, shelters, and power plants. "The indigenous mobile equipment manufactured by ITI - besides meeting the requirement of domestic needs - will also have the potential for overseas market, particularly in SAARC and Afro-Asian countries. ITI plans to explore the export market in line with its technology provider," it said. ITI's Rae Bareli plant was established in 1973, for production of Strowger exchanges. In 1980, the plant started manufacturing cross bar exchanges until 1991. The plant rolled out E-10B Switches from 1990-1996 followed by production of C-DOT exchanges from 1993-2003.The plant was last engaged in the production of SMPS (Switched Mode Power Supply) from 1994, which is still going on.
