Software BioImagene to expand Pune centre Our Bureau
Pune , Nov. 9 BIOIMAGENE Inc, a San Jose-based biomedical imaging company having operations in Pune, has earmarked $5 million for its Indian operations. The co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of BioImagene India, Mr Mohan Uttarwar, said that the company is now looking at strategic investments. He said they are also looking at setting up support centres in Europe as well as the Far East Asia and a couple of hubs in India soon. It may be recalled that the company in October 2004 had received about $4.2 million Series B financing led by Tuputele Ventures, Authosis Inc and ICCP Ventures. The company would use these funds to launch its product globally and expand its sales and marketing efforts in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. Mr Mohan said the company, which currently has 65 people on its rolls, is planning to have 100 by the calendar year end. It began its operations here with three on its rolls. It is now pioneering a new generation of life science image informatics solution, catering to the specific needs of research scientists and pathologists across the globe. He noted that it has about 10 patents and two patent applications to its credit. It has also set up a new facility spread across 6,000 sq ft in Pune, which could house100 professionals. BioImagene is also working on a consultancy project for the Center for Comparative Medicine, UC Davis. Under this project, BioImagene is developing a mouse genomic data centre as part of caBIG (Cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid). Looking at the digital pathology market, Mr Mohan pointed out that the market size could be pegged at $15 billion while noting that in US alone, over 10,000 cancer cases were being sent out for second opinions on a daily basis. Digital pathology could be the next form of outsourcing as demands far outstripped the supply, he added.
