New Delhi , Nov 17

KINGFISHER Airlines plans to place orders for new turbo-prop and jet aircraft at the Dubai air show, the airline Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Vijay Mallya, said on Thursday.

"The announcement will be made on November 20 and 21. We intend to place one turbo prop aircraft in Bangalore to serve the south Indian market and one in Guwahati for the North East. The first of these aircraft will arrive in March next year and will offer the same facilities that are available on the jet aircraft operated now," Mr Mallya said.

However, details on the number of aircraft ordered or the cost of acquisition were not available. "The acquisition will be funded through both internal and external funds," Mr Mallya said.

At the Paris air-show in June this year, the airline placed orders with the European aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, for 15 planes, including five of the world's largest A380 aircraft and as many A350s and A330s. Delivery of the aircraft is expected in 2010.

The airline, which currently operates seven Airbus A-320 aircraft, plans to induct two more early next month. In the first six months of operations, the airline has grown from operating four to 52 flights a day.

Earlier, addressing the Indo-US Economic summit, Mr Mallya said the group was also looking at setting up an aviation university. "The facility will come up outside Mumbai and have simulators. It will help meet not only our demand but also that of the market," Mr Mallya said.

The airline has written to the Government, seeking changes in the norms governing operation of domestic airlines in the international skies.
