Central grant for Bengal port project

THE West Bengal Government's plan to have a Shanghai-type port in the State can hope to succeed if the Union Government is generous enough in making available huge grants for the project. This will require the Centre to bend its present policy guidelines, according to experts in the port sector.

The experts are not sure if the private entrepreneurs, unless convinced of the traffic potential of the project, can be persuaded to share a sizeable portion of the cost.
