SICA's initiative to promote ELS cotton

Our Bureau

Coimbatore. Nov. 20

, AS PART of its efforts to promote extra long staple (ELS) cotton, the South India Cotton Association (SICA) here is planning to have a front line demonstration (FLD) on cotton cultivation for select cotton farmers groups.

SICA has chosen to expose three farmers groups initially to its FLD to be held in its model cotton farm developed at its Coimbatore premises. The SICA's model cotton farm has been sponsored by the city-based textile company, Super Spinning Mills Ltd.

The FLD will focus on adopting the farming practices for raising the new ELS cotton, Sara-II, developed by the Super Spinning Mills under its own R&D effort.

According to SICA sources, three cotton farming groups which would be drawn from regions having scope for cultivation of ELS cotton varieties would be supported with all the necessary inputs on crop management practices so as to motivate them to taking up seriously the ELS cotton cultivation in their areas.

To start with, the farmers to be drawn for the FLD would be from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, besides the North Arcot district of Tamil Nadu, which are the known tracts growing the ELS cotton DCH-32.
