Our Bureau

Chennai , Nov. 20

SWARAJ Mazda Ltd, the commercial and passenger vehicle manufacturer, will invest Rs 250 crore to treble its manufacturing facility to 36,000 vehicles a year.

It will also set up an in-house bus manufacturing facility with a capacity to build 9,000 buses a year, according to Mr Yash Mahajan, Group's Chief Executive.

He was addressing a press conference at the launch of a 30-seater ultra-luxury bus here. The expansion and the new bus manufacturing facility are to meet the anticipated growth in demand in this segment. Tourism is booming and state transport corporations, which have not expanded their fleet for years, are likely to be among the growth areas, he said.

The company has technical tie-up with two Malaysian companies and a major Japanese player is also interested in collaboration. He declined to give the details. These will be out in six weeks when more products are launched, he said.

One of the products will be a 41-seater, which will not be on a Mazda platform. It will be the product of the tie-up with a Malaysian company. Another product in the pipeline is a 24-seater, he said.

The bus manufacturing facility is likely to be ready in about a year-and-a-half.
