THE administration of import policy on metal scrap continues to be an uphill task for the Government, which has now temporarily suspended the acceptance of pre-shipment inspection (PSI) certificates of eight agencies.
This action follows the Revenue Department's communication to the Directorate-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) that these PSI agencies had issued false certificates. In some cases, there was even recovery of ammunition in the imported metal scrap, the Department has said.
Confirming the temporary suspension move, the Director-General of Foreign Trade, Mr K.T. Chacko, told Business Line that the PSI certificates issued by these agencies would not be accepted until a thorough investigation was undertaken by the DGFT.
The PSI agencies are Gulf Inspection International Co, Kuwait; Alex Stewart International Corporation, Rotterdam; BSI Inspectorate Ltd, Essex; Shin Nihon Kentei Kyokai, Japan; Intertek Group Plc, London; Bureau Veritas, Madagascar; WLSI Group and Affiliates, US; and American Assessors India (Pvt) Ltd, Hyderabad.
