`Need for mutual trust to strengthen industrial harmony'

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 25

THE guiding principle of labour-related laws is to promote workers' welfare and ensure social security without disturbing industrial harmony, according to Mr S.K. Mukhopadhyay, Chief Labour Commissioner, Ministry of Labour and Employment.

He was addressing the inaugural session of a seminar on industrial relations, `Towards strengthening and sustaining harmony' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in partnership with the International Management Institute. The logic of welfare should go hand-in-hand with logic of competition, he added.

Mr R.P.K. Murugesan, Secretary, Indian National Trade Union Congress, said economic growth was leading to jobless growth. He said the manufacturing sector had to grow stronger for generating more employment opportunities. There should be mutual trust between workers, management and employers.

Dr M.K. Pandhe, President, Centre for Indian Trade Unions, said competition had created an adverse effect on industrial relations and the nature of competition must be reviewed.

He also highlighted the importance to undertake appraisal of globalisation to understand its benefits. Referring to the Human Development Index, he shared his concern over India's position at 127.
