`BPO boom has not hit corporate travel business'

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Nov. 26

THE booming BPO business has not affected the corporate travel business out of India as travel intensity had maintained its tempo with large number of MNCs' presence and the necessity for regular interfacing between corporate executives and experts continuing to generate more business.

However, the runaway growth witnessed in the last three years due to economic boom, was bound to slow down corporate travel business in the short term due to poor infrastructure.

The fast growing airlines industry could face the twin problems of shortage of trained pilots and airport infrastructure to man the large fleet expansion by new old airlines following open sky policy, affecting the growth.

However, said Mr Berthold Trenkel, Chief Operating Officer, Asia Pacific, Carlson Wagonlit (CWT), one of the leading corporate travel service providers, a realistic growth of 17-20 per cent in the business could be essayed in the Asia Pacific region where several countries were witnessing rapid economic growth.

CWT was targeting a 20 per cent year-on-year growth in its turnover, with the two fastest growing economies of China and India accounting for an estimated 30-40 per cent growth. Japan, which was passing through a long economic slow down could grow at 10 per cent, with the rest of the countries' also chipping in, Mr Trenkel said.

A specialist corporate travel service provider with global revenue of $19 billion, CWT saw a 47 per cent growth in its last year's turnover Rs 815 crore. Its growth was 25 per cent in the previous year.
