New Delhi , Nov. 29

IN a bid to provide an impetus to the renewable energy sector, the Government is drafting a comprehensive policy to promote installation of renewable energy capacities.

The policy would attempt to streamline the process of awarding clearances for renewable energy installations across all States, Mr Vilas Muttemwar, Minister for Non-Conventional Energy Sources, said today.

Speaking at the `Interactive Session on Renewable Energy Sources' here, Mr Muttemwar said that of the total grid power capacity in the country, nearly 7 per cent (around 7,000 MW) came from renewable sources.

Wind power alone contributes 4 per cent with installed capacity touching 4,225 MW in October 2005, making India the fourth largest wind energy player after Germany, the US and Spain.

Talking about the Government's efforts to streamline the procedural bottlenecks faced by the sector, Mr Muttemwar said that in the case of micro hydel projects, for instance, the procedures to be followed by a developer are almost the same as those for a major hydel project, despite the lower environmental implications and rehabilitation efforts required in the former.

"The issues would be addressed in the policy. We are in discussions with all states and they are coming down to a common view," he said. He also said efforts were on to develop indigenous design and manufacture of wind material components, sub-systems and wind electric generators that are low-cost and of international standard. Mr Muttemwar also lauded the efforts of the Indian Renewable Energy Community, particularly industry that has demonstrated internationally the Indian capabilities in development, deployment and commer- cialisation of renewable energy technologies in the last few years.
