Damodar Valley applies for more captive coal blocks

Pratim Ranjan Bose

Kolkata , Dec. 3

DAMODAR Valley Corporation (DVC) coupled with its subsidiary Maithon Power Ltd has applied for more captive coal blocks.

Informed sources said that while MPL has applied for four captive blocks, DVC has applied for three to four blocks to feed its proposed mega power projects in Durgapur and Kodarma.

DVC was awarded three captive blocks for the first time in May this year. The blocks of a combined reserve of 150 million tonnes were offered for captive consumption of the corporation's biggest thermal power plant of 840 MW at Mejia in West Bengal. A 26:74 joint venture between DVC and EMTA Ltd is currently developing the mines which will be ready for production shortly.

Maithon Power is a newly formed joint venture with Tata Power for the setting up of a 1,000-MW thermal power plant at Maithon in Jharkhand and is yet to be assured sufficient linkage by the coal companies.

DVC previously had one small captive mine at Bermo in Jharkhand inherited through its acquisition of Bokaro Steel thermal power facility in the 1950s.
