Strategy Info-Tech - Broadband In2Cable offers broadband connection for Rs 450 a year Our Bureau
New Delhi , Dec 6 SMALLER companies seem to taking on telecom biggies such as Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd in the broadband segment. The Hindujas promoted cable Internet networking company In2Cable is now offering pre-paid broadband connection for as low as Rs 200 per quarter and Rs 450 for a full year subscription. Subscribers will get 256 kbps speeds and 400 mb free download for the three-month package and 500 mb download for a connection with one year validity, making it one of the cheapest broadband connection on offer. State-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd is offering 400 Mb download for a rental of Rs 199 a month while BSNL is charging Rs 250 a month for its broadband offering. Tata Teleservices pre-paid connection valid for a 3-month period costs more than Rs 1,000. Mr Anil Srivastava, GM (Sales & Marketing), In2Cable (India) Ltd said that the service is being offered at present in 8 cities including Delhi, Indore, Nagpur, Mumbai and Bangalore. The company plans to expand its network to all the cities where it has a TV cable network. With In2Cable, subscribers don't need a PC or a phone line to access broadband service, but require a TV and a cable modem as it does not use the DSL technology being used by BSNL and MTNL. BSNL officials, however, said that there was a large difference in the quality of service being offered, by the state-owned company, through copper wires using DSL technology and the service offered through cable wires. Also consumers have to fork out an installation cost of nearly Rs 3,000 initially for cable broadband, BSNL and MTNL are charging about Rs 1,000 for installation. "We are constantly monitoring the market. BSNL has always offered the best rates to its subscribers and will continue to do so in the future. We have introduced some packages in the recent past that makes broadband affordable and more innovations are in the offing," said a BSNL official. Mr Srivastava, however, said that the cable network was better positioned to offer high speed broadband and also better after sales support.
