US supports Indian involvement in ITER project

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Dec. 9

THE US and other partners in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project have invited India as a full partner in the energy venture.

"The US and its ITER partners — the European Union, Russia, Japan, South Korea and China — agreed at the ITER negotiations meeting in Jeju, South Korea, to invite India as a full partner," according to a US Embassy release here.

It said the US "strongly" supported India's application to join the project, ensuring the final agreement.

The ITER decision "represents the first tangible and concrete step toward greater cooperation between the US and India in the nuclear field as envisioned" by the US President, Mr George W. Bush, in the July 18 joint statement with the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, it said.

The main ITER facility will be built in Cadarache in France and all partners will participate in its construction, development and research.
