Tea 2nd lowest tea volume on offer at Coonoor sales P.S. Sundar
Coonoor , Dec. 12 A VOLUME of 9.25 lakh kg of teas catalogued for this week's auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) to take place on Thursday and Friday is more than the lowest volume of 8.4 lakh kg for year which was offered last week. Howeverl, it is still low because, this is the second lowest volume offered so far for the year. This will be the seventh time in 2005 when the volume is below 10 lakh kg. In all the remaining 43 auctions of this year, the volume was more than 10 lakh kg. Of them, only last week, the volume drifted to less than 9 lakh kg. "The volumes are low because of the weather curtailing the harvest. Also, the growers and the manufacturers are resorting to quality manufacture ridding the market of low quality teas", an auctioneer told Business Line. Of the 9.25 lakh kg on offer, 6.51 lakh kg belong to the leaf grades and the remaining 2.74 lakh kg, the dust grades. Again, as much as 8.44 lakh kg belong to CTC variety and only the balance 0.81 lakh kg, the orthodox variety. Of them, 0.35 lakh kg of orthodox teas are in the leaf grade while the remaining 0.46 lakh kg are in the dust grade.
