Alliances & Joint Ventures Zydus Cadila, Bharat Serums to develop new drug delivery system Our Bureau
Ahmedabad , Dec. 17 CADILA Healthcare Ltd (better known as Zydus Cadila) and Bharat Serums and Vaccines have set up a joint venture company to produce a new drug delivery system (NDDS) for an approved anti-cancer product for the global markets. "The 50:50 joint venture company will develop, manufacture and market a non-infringing and proprietary NDDS. With evidence promising safety and anti-tumour activity in a variety of cancer models in animals, this NDDS product has demonstrated a competitive advantage," the Zydus Chairman and Managing Director, Mr Pankaj R. Patel, said here on Friday. The NDDS is a new mechanism to administer a particular drug, which could be in the form of a unique dosage or method of delivery that makes the medicine more effective and convenient for the user. "This collaboration with BSV complements our focus on developing innovative injectable oncology (cancer treatment) products. We believe that the future of the oncology market will be driven by novel drug delivery systems offering improved efficacy, better safety and improved tolerance profile resulting in optimal therapy for patients," Mr Patel said. As per the agreement, both companies will undertake a core development programme and are initiating clinical trials for product registration in leading pharmaceutical markets for potential treatment of multiple types of cancer. The annual global sales of currently available dosage form of the drug are likely to reach $500 million (Rs 2,500 crore) in 2005. Zydus and Bharat Serums have also developed a global development programme to maximise the commercial potential of the product. Zydus also announced that the company has filed its second Investigational New Drug application for the New Modecular Entity (NME) - ZYI 1 with the Drug Controller General of India. This novel agent for treatment of inflammatory disorders has been designed and developed by Zydus Research Centre, the research wing of the company. The new molecule has shown a good pre-clinical profile and has a unique mechanism of action.
