Pollution monitoring agencies have come up with strict norms to check the problem. According to the Kerala State Pollution Control Board, there are 423 hazardous waste generating units in the State.

The total hazardous waste generated is 82,724 million tonnes per annum. As much as 87.7 per cent of the total hazardous waste is generated by 65 units in the large sector.

Out of this, 48.87 per cent is generated in Ernakulam district followed by 39.28 per cent in Kollam. A scene from suburban Kochi.
