THE stage is getting set for the launch of Insat-4A, ISRO's latest and heaviest satellite, from Kourou in the wee hours of December 22.
The 3,080-kg Insat-4A is the first of the fourth-generation Insats and a bulk of it is meant for the direct-to-home (DTH) television segment.
Tata Sky, the joint venture of the Tatas and the Rupert Murdoch-owned STAR group, has booked all 12 Ku-band transponders on the satellite. It carries 12 C-band transponders for augmenting its communication services.
Insat-4A will fly on the 169th flight of the Ariane rocket along with European met satellite MSG-2 between 4-03 and 4-31 a.m. IST.
Days after launch, it will be positioned 36,000 km above the surface and located at 83 degrees East longitude along with Insat-2E and Insat-3B.
The Master Control Facility at Hassan is ready to take control of the satellite when it is placed in the temporary or transfer GTO orbit, ISRO said.
