Exports & Imports Agri-Biz & Commodities - Spices & Condiments Pepper imports rise despite curbs G.K. Nair
Kochi , Dec. 20 PEPPER imports into the country have continued to increase during the past three years and despite the restrictive measures imposed this year, it stood at 15,926 tonnes during January-October 2005 as against 14,096 tonnes in the corresponding period in 2004 and 10,611.72 tonnes in the same period in 2003. Out of the total imports of 1,400 tonnes in October last, 967.93 tonnes were through the Kochi port. Of this 268.20 tonnes were from Sri Lanka, while 382.66 tonnes from Vietnam and 250.41 tonnes from Indonesia. The remaining 66.66 tonnes were from others destinations. Exports in October was around 1,000 tonnes. "Even though imports have been banned, pepper import is continuing unabated through the pending advance licences issued prior to the ban, as they are issued with 18 months validity," market sources here alleged. They said the Centre had suspended issue of advance licence on March 28, besides restricting the 100 per cent EOUs from selling their wastage and semi-processed material in domestic tariff area on May 13, 2005.
