Information Technology ATMs win over rural Kerala C.J. Punnathara
Kochi , Dec. 21 BANK customers in Kochi perceive ATMs to be as secure as bank branches, a study commissioned by NCR Corporation, an ATM vendor in India, has revealed. The pan-India study conducted by AC Nielsen ORG-MARG found that a high majority of bank customers in Kochi showed a clear preference for new product applications and 90 per cent of the respondents stated that they would use ATMs for depositing cheques if the new intelligent deposit technology (with scanned cheque image as receipt) was available. The preference for new applications and technology-savvy banking is not restricted to the towns and cities of Kerala. Mr M. Venugopalan, Chairman of Federal Bank, said: "Of the 200 odd Federal Bank ATMs in the State, as much as 75 per cent would be in the rural and semi-urban pockets." "The demand for the latest in banking technology has transcended boundaries and what is perceived essential for the city of Kochi is equally required in rural Kumbanad ," Dr V.A. Joseph, Chairman of the South Indian Bank, said. On an average, the Federal Bank ATM located at the busy Marine Drive in the heart of Kochi clocked 400 transactions a day, but it was not unusual for the ATM at rural Perumbavoor to register 600 transactions, Mr Venugopalan said. This is also due to the high degree of security that the customers feel in using ATMs, both in rural and urban Kerala. Mr Deepak Chandnani, Managing Director of NCR Corporation of India, said: "We have long believed that ATMs offer the most secure and comprehensive self-service channel, but we felt it was important to check if the banking customers perceived this the same way. As we continue to make significant technological investments in our holistic approach to ATM security, we are glad, the customers have validated our belief in this important banking channel."
