A theatre turned into a shopping mall in Thoppumpadi near Kochi. During the last five years, over 300 theatres have closed down in Kerala. In 2001, the total number of cinema houses in the State was 1,187. Exhibitors say that proliferation of pirated CDs, increasing electricity charges, high maintenance cost and entertainment tax were the stumbling blocks in their business.
