Hardware Info-Tech - New Products & Services Marketing - Market Shares Acer unveils fifth generation tablet PC Our Bureau
Bangalore , Dec. 23 PC vendor Acer India will aim at garnering 25 per cent of the market share in 2006. The company's market share in 2004 was 12 per cent, which grew to 16 per cent this year. Mr S. Rajendran, General Manager - Sales and Marketing, Consumer Products Group, Acer India, launched here a tablet PC, TravelMate C202. The TravelMate C202 is a fifth-generation tablet PC targeted at the healthcare sector. Costing Rs 94,999, the device's sliding-track mechanism allows its conversion between notebook and slate modes. It has a 12.1-inch LCD screen, which acts as an input device, with the help of an electro magnetic recorder pen. Acer has been selling tablet PCs over the last two-and-half years. The tablet PCs have seen traction only over the last one year, and the installed base is 3,000 units, said Mr Rajendran. The company manufactures 100 tablet PCs per month, and hopes to double this figure. To drive this, healthcare initiatives such as the Doctor Empowerment through Acer Notebooks, a rebate programme exclusively for doctors, will be launched. In January, Acer, in association with Intel, will identify 50 private hospitals and offer them tablet PCs at special prices. The company is not in any tie-up with government hospitals, and is mainly targeting hi-tech private facilities in the country. The ITeS sector and architects might also benefit from tablet PCs, he said. The company sold 25,000 laptops in the third quarter of this year. In July, the company in association with AMD launched the Ferrari range of laptops. These stylish laptops, costing Rs 1 lakh each, are being sold at a rate of 150 units per month. The Travel Mate 4000 series, powered by Intel's Centrino processor, is noticeably picking up steam, he said.
