Sushma Berlia elected president of PHDCCI

IN what may be for the first time that a woman is heading an apex chamber in the country, Ms Sushma Berlia, President, Apeejay Stya Group and Vice-President of Apeejay Education Society, has been elected President of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry for 2006.

She succeeds Mr K.N. Memani, former Chairman and Country Managing Partner, Ernst & Young.

Mr Sanjay Bhatia, Managing Director, Hindustan Tin works, has been elected as the Vice-President. The two office bearers were elected unanimously at the first meeting of the re-constituted managing committee of the chamber.

Ms Berlia is also the founder chairperson of the chamber's Business Women's Committee, apart from being the chairperson of other committees of the chamber. She has a Masters in Business Economics and joined the corporate world in 1989. Apeejay Stya Group is a conglomerate with activities in several sectors including life science, IT, education, international trading, retail, chemicals and plastics and real estate.
