BIS advisory on hallmarking

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Bureau of Indian Standards has issued an advisory to consumers to go for only hallmarked jewellery.

This comes close on the heels of an order issued by the Reserve Bank of India to all scheduled commercial banks to give preference to hallmarked jewellery while sanctioning gold loans.

An official spokesman said here that the order would encourage the practice of hallmarking, which would in turn ensure the long-term interests of the consumers, lenders and the industry. Hallmarking ensured the quality of gold used in jewellery in respect of caratage, fineness and purity, he added.
