Cement majors post robust sales in Dec — Stocks move up on firm prices

CEMENT majors have reported robust growth in sales for December 2005; and with cement prices increasing as well in some regions, cement scrips too posted robust gains on the stock exchanges.

The Associated Cement Companies reported a 18 per cent year-on-year increase in despatches for the month.

It sold 15.95 lakh tonnes of cement in December 2005 as against 13.48 lakh tonnes in December 2004.

The Aditya Birla group companies — Grasim Industries and UltraTech Cement — reported an increase of 12.96 per cent in cumulative sales, at 25.9 lakh tonnes, for the month.

Gujarat Ambuja Cements reported a 7 per cent increase in shipments for the month.

Sales were at 11.95 lakh tonnes, up from 11.16 lakh tonnes in December 2004.

In some markets, notably the west and the south, cement prices increased by about Rs 3 per bag (50 kg). Price growth was flat in the north and east where the cold wave has temporarily hampered construction activities, said industry officials.

Grasim Industries today gained Rs 53.2 on BSE or 3.87 per cent to close at Rs 1,429.1.

UltraTech Cement rose by Rs 14.15, gaining 3.35 per cent to close at Rs 436.80.

ACC rose by 3.2 per cent, increasing by Rs 17 over the day to close at Rs 547.50. Gujarat Ambuja Cements rose by 2.27 per cent on BSE, rising by Rs 1.80 to close at Rs 81.
