The challenge is in making high tech work for the poor: Mashelkar

THE Director-General of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr R.A. Mashelkar, has called for a paradigm shift in doing research in order to offer quality products and services to the poor at affordable prices.
He said there was a need for innovations in technological, social and policy spheres to improve the quality of life of the poor. The challenge is to make available affordable, accessible and appropriate technologies.
Speaking on `Making high technology work for the poor' at the 93rd Indian Science Congress here on Tuesday, he cited the innovative solutions offered by the Shriram Research Institute (sanitary napkins at Rs 1), Tatas (the Rs 1-lakh car), telecom players (cheaper services) and technology companies (sub-Rs 10,000 computers).
The sub-Rs 10,000 computer (SoftComp) is now getting enquiries not just from Indian companies such as ITC's e-choupal and AirTel, but global companies such as Wal-Mart and Walnut are also showing interest in it. Dr Mashelkar also highlighted the technological initiatives triggered by New Millennium India Technology Leadership Initiative.
In the social sector, innovative models employing technology could help the country eradicate poverty far earlier than the 20-year target.
