Spices Board to conduct W. Asia market study

G.K. Nair

Kochi , Jan. 4

THE Spices Board is in the process of appointing Tata Consultancy Services for conducting a project study on the cardamom market in the West Asian market, in a bid to boost export of Indian cardamom in the region.

It would conduct an extensive study of the market to find out ways to increase the market for Indian cardamom. The potential for value-added and branded products would also be covered by the study, a senior Board official told Business Line. The study, at a cost of Rs 60 lakh, would be completed in four months, he said.

The West Asian countries, especially Saudi Arabia, had been a major market for the aromatic Indian spice. But with the arrival of cheap cardamom from other origins, the demand for Indian cardamom has declined significantly in the recent years. Shipments to Saudi Arabia decreased from 496.10 tonnes in 2000-01 to 321 tonnes and 347 tonnes respectively in 2001-02 and 2002-03, while in 2003-04 it was around 400 tonnes. The situation is similar in other West Asian countries too, he said.
