Education `Education must for success of economic system' Our Bureau
Kolkata , Jan. 8 THE West Bengal Minister for Higher Education, Mr Satya sadhan Chakraborty, has said that the new industrial revolution sweeping around the world now has ushered in a knowledge-based society, which has opened the gates for "education for all". Speaking at the inaugural session of the two-day national conference on `Promoting partnerships towards education for sustainable development', organised by the Institute for Planning, Innovative Research, Appropriate Training and Extension here, he said education today, is far more important for economic development, "as we are living in an age of information technology." Suggesting that "man cannot live by bread alone", Mr Chakraborty said there must be higher aspirations as a human being. "We need to create a cultured society through education." The Minister also urged voluntary organisations to take up the challenge of educating and training young minds, as schools and colleges alone cannot do this. Stressing on the need to devise a strategy for sustainable development, the Minister said education has a very important role to play here. He also called for a combination of Governmental and non-governmental efforts (read as partnerships) to achieve the goal. He said education was the right instrument to achieve sustainability.
