Poultry Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Suguna group to export 'portion' chicken to Japan G. Gurumurthy
Coimbatore , Jan. 9 POULTRY major Suguna group is set to export value-added processed chicken to Japan in a month. Suguna will export the chicken to three Japanese firms which have evinced interest to import "portion" chicken. "We'll start commercial production of portion chicken, meant for export to Japan, from around the middle of this month. The sample export production would go on for a month and we will be able to ship a couple of containers initially on a trial basis," said Mr B. Soundararajan, Managing Director of Suguna Poultry Farm Ltd. The first shipment is likely by the end of next month. If Suguna's plans fructify, it will be the first processed chicken export from India to the sophisticated Japanese market. Suguna already exportsfrozen whole chicken to the West Asian market. The Japanese importers who visited Suguna's chicken processing unit in Udumalpet in Coimbatore district are believed to have enabled the company strengthen its infrastructure, including training the workers to take up chicken processing according to the needs of the Japanese market . The Union Government had cleared the company's export to Japan a couple of weeks ago. As against the average export realisation for whole frozen chicken at $1,400 dollar a tonne, Suguna's value added `portion' chicken to Japan is poised to fetch $3,500-4,000 per tonne, if the trial production is acceptable by the Japanese market. According to Mr Soundararajan, the Union Government has proposed to constitute a committee to explore the possibility of tapping the European Union market for processed chicken export.
