Performance Volvo India truck sales up 65 pc Our Bureau
Mr Eric Leblanc, Managing Director of Volvo India, at the launch of the Volvo Tipper Truck in Bangalore on Tuesday. V. Sreenivasa Murthy
Bangalore , Jan. 10 DESPITE a flat market growth, Volvo India closed the year 2005 with sales of 600 trucks, an increase of about 65 per cent from the previous year. Speaking to newspersons here at the launch of the upgraded version of FM9 340 hp 8x4 tipper to support the mining and construction industries, Volvo India's Managing Director, Mr Eric Leblanc, said the Volvo brand is establishing itself in the multi-axle and tractor trail segments in the country. Over 1,000 Volvo tippers are already operational in mines across the country. About 70 per cent of last year's sales came from repeat purchase, Mr Leblanc said. The new FM9 tipper has increased power levels and higher torque levels to enable handling of steeper gradients in construction, mining and infrastructure projects, according to Mr Mansoor Ahmed, Vice-President (Marketing), Volvo India. It offers an optional feature called `heat body' where the exhaust is driven through the truck body to avoid sticky material getting accumulated, thus increasing production levels per tipper. It also has an additional fuel tank capacity of 95 litres that allows uninterrupted operations for about 18 hours a day. Volvo India reported a turnover of Rs 600 crore in 2004. Volvo in India has a presence in buses, trucks, marine and industrial power systems and exports trucks to South Korea and buses to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Components worth about 50 million euros were exported from the global sourcing division.
