THE Council for Leather Exports (CLE) is concerned about the declining trend in leather garment exports and the slow growth in leather goods export, and hopes to frame an action plan to accelerate exports.
According to a CLE release, globally, the import of leather garments has been stagnant at about $4,000 million (Rs 18,000 crore) and that of leather goods has increased to $8,883 million (Rs 39,973 crore) in 2003 compared to $5,314 million (Rs 23,913 crore) in 1992.
India is the fourth largest supplier in these two categories with leather garment exports of $161 million (Rs 724 crore) between April and September 2005, which is 8 per cent lower than exports of $175 million (Rs 787 crore) for the corresponding period in April-September 2004.
During the same period, April-September 2005, leather goods export grew by 6 per cent to $301 million (Rs 1,354 crore) against $284 million (Rs 1,278 crore).
The council organised a brainstorming session with exporters of leather garments and leather goods in the southern region. It hopes to frame an appropriate action plan to boost exports.
It also held discussions with designers from the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), which presented the fashion and trend inputs from the Lineapelle Fair at Bologna, Italy.
The council has also set up a Leather Design Centre in collaboration with NIFT and the Indian Leather Garments Association for design development and international trend inputs to the sector.
