Outlook Industry & Economy - Events Volvo may bag another order for 25 buses K. Giriprakash
New Delhi , Jan. 12 VOLVO is understood to be close to bagging a fresh order of 25 more intra-city buses from the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). Sources in the company told Business Line that the next set of 25 buses will be used to connect different points in Bangalore. The first 25 buses are expected to ply between ITPL, Electronic City and the airport. "These buses is expected to ply on longer routes and probably transport people working at IT companies outside the city," the sources said. The first of these buses will hit the road from January 17. The next 25 buses will connect key points inside the city. "We expect more orders based on the feedback the BMTC receives from the public," they said. Each of these buses, a model of which was unveiled at the Auto Expo, 2006, cost around Rs 60 lakh, nearly 20 per cent more than other such type of buses. The Volvo bus division, which has sold 400 inter-city buses in 2005, expects to post a 25-30 per cent growth this year too. The bus division contributes 25 per cent to the total revenues of Volvo's operations in India. The Volvo B7RLE City Bus is manufactured from the same assembly line from which Volvo trucks are built. The body is built at the Jaico Automobile Engineering Company near Bangalore. Volvo is also in talks with Delhi's transport corporation for launching these intra-city buses. Equipped with a seven-litre engine that meets the Euro 3 emission norms, the body is built on the same design as the Volvo 8700, which is currently used in Europe. These buses have stepless entry and the entire floor actually kneels low to be in line with a typical bus stop height. Volvo India registered a 65 per cent growth in volume during 2005, selling about 600 trucks of various types.
