Tata Tele launches new service for TN rural areas

TATA Teleservices Ltd has launched `Indicom 10', a wireless desktop phone service targeted at the rural and semi-urban population.

The company has rolled out the service in 60 centres across Tamil Nadu and has coined the slogan `One State, One Rate,' with the call charge fixed at 90 paise/minute to power its promotional campaign.

Mr M.A. Madhusudan, Chief Operating Officer, Tata Teleservices, Tamil Nadu and Kerala circles, said the company might revisit the tariff once the `One Nation, One Rate' scheme, under which the call charge would be Re 1 per minute across the country, is launched.

At a press conference here recently, Mr Madhusudan said the new scheme would be offered in places where Tata Indicom's Walky scheme is not available.

The number `10' in `Indicom 10' denoted the ten-digit telephone number that will be allotted under the scheme.

He said he did not expect the rural population to face any difficulty in getting used to ten digit numbers.

The scheme will be a pre-paid one and offer customers mobility and convenience since the lightweight instrument can be carried easily by customers wherever they go.

Mr Madhusudan said the call rates for other categories would also be a lot cheaper - local and intra-circle calls to mobile phones would be cheaper by 43 per cent, intra-circle calls to landlines would cost 25 per cent less and STD calls would be lighter on the purse by 25 per cent per minute compared to the current standard offers. The activation charge will be Rs 1,650.

Though it comes as an alternative to landline connections, the advantage of wireless phone service is that no physical wiring work is needed for last mile connectivity and there will be no waiting period to get the connection - a problem faced by potential rural landline subscribers now.

Mr Madhusudan said Tata Teleservices' network covered around 200 towns in Tamil Nadu and the plan was to extend coverage to 300 towns by the end of this fiscal.
